Does it have to do with the key that the Rook men held when they had momentarily captured Bali here?
(Oddly my first post with links to the pages didn’t go through, but they are page 68 and 71)
I’m more concerned that Bali isn’t depicted as being next to Sid. If Sid was blocking him from getting out of the boat on the previous page, the two of them should be right next to each other on this page.
I’m thinking maybe the key recorded his memories or read his thoughts/ desires.
There’s another page where the Rook men enter a tribe with the same keys. The keys start off with a floating man w/ hole in the center shaped symbol. That is the first symbol the key had when the Rook men were ready to capture Bali. It changed into an eye shaped symbol, then finally after that, then the shape of Bali’s hat. I suspect they recorded Bali’s thoughts/ desires/ memories. How else do they seem to know about his disappointment over the smoke walk? I don’t recall Bali mentioning that outside the village, unless he mentioned it to Sid some time. Those ghosts or beasts mimicking Bali’s tribe are targeting him using deeply personal memories/ desires.
either Bali’s hypnotised/mesmerised and about to jump off the boat or he originated from that group (i recall Bali didn’t actually belong to his current tribe - or something)
I thought about that possibility (and I do still suspect Bali originated from the Forest somehow), but the creepy nature of these people has me thinking it may be more like the former idea. Their hats seem to be a clue. They start off looking close to the ones worn early in the comic, but then change shape/ get more simple, and the eyes seem to be taking a life of their own. The hands have disappeared and the feed seem to be merging in with the clothes. It looks like they are morphing.

I think not: Bali got away from the rook before they actually did anything with that key. They’re just bluffing… or so I hope.

Silly wabbit. They *are* the Rook.
Oh dang @.@
Ahhh the suspense. The teaser I saw on Twitter indicates Bali is a bit surprised but not in a good way.
I hope its just that I missed a “going on vacation” memo. 🙁
