The final panel, with the human arms and hands echoed by the tree limbs, is so evocative of the pain and suffering these people went/are going through. Brava.
Oh man, wouldn’t that be a cruel fate. If so, I actually feel pity for them, more than the…intense dislike I’ve been feeling. Never thought that would happen!
It is very sad indeed. It it is true I hope there will be a way to reverse the spell and either bring them to life or to release their souls so they can enjoy the rest of their afterlife in peace. I keep going back to that page in my head where the Rook men were asking Bali several times if he was lost and were trying to make him to come with them. There were other clues like the hats they wear vs Mali’s hat. They appear to have similar origins? What if Mali Mani created the Rook men, perhaps by accident, when he defeated the halfway beast? It struck me the beasts called the Rook men strangers. They didn’t seem to be native to the forest, or at least weren’t in that form. The stone gods calling Bali Mali, I don’t think is out of confusion. I still think there is a lot more to that page than what met the eye, and also Bali saying he wants to make things right. Until convinced otherwise I will believe Bali = Mali Mani. I think he either reincarnated or has been given another chance to fix his past mistakes. But he has to awaken first.
This was my thought last night but I was waiting to see if anyone else was thinking this before posting my thought. I kept thinking about that past page where they kept asking Bali if he was lost.
what might throw the theory in a loop, is if there were Rook men before the Halfway beast did his sun capture and got defeated by Mali. This appears to have happened afterwards.
It doesn’t make it impossible. It could be there were “lost” people before then and this is another wave of “lost” new rook people created. This will be interesting to find out.
Every page amazes me with its beauty.

The Rook men also have those tree branches coming from their body. I think this might be a hint.

Going by that last panel, the lost ones might have become the Rook Men, if they ever existed at all.
