Volume III: Page 01
Hey everybody! Here we are again! I’m starting up updating Volume III, Bird Boy and the City of Ghosts, today!
I hope you all have had a good few months and are ready for a spooky story. It is October, after all!
You may notice a few changes on the website. The big one is that the archives are gone! Volumes 1 and 2 are now printed books through Dark Horse. They were always meant to be read as a print book all at once, so I’m really happy with how they came out. They’re available in book stores and online, both print and digital editions, so they’re pretty easy to find and not crazy expensive! If you missed out on the first two volumes and can’t get access to the first two books, I’ve added a little synopsis at the beginning of the archives so you can still catch up before diving into Volume 3. Hopefully it’s helpful! And if you’ve already purchased a book, thaaank youuuu!
Enjoy the page and see you all next week!

Yay, the waiting is over!
Great art as ever.
baacckk!
Hooray, BirdBoy’s back!
…You mean absolutely broke people like me and newcomers can’t get the full story anymore? That seems…counter intuitive for a webcomic. I wish I’d known you were going to do that so I could’ve done a reread while I had the chance. I really, really do.
@Anna You’ll either have to buy the previous volume or check webarchive. You might be able to read a some of the older pages on the archive.
The archive is now just “Synopsis” and “Book Three”. No links. Plus, I -cannot- buy anything online as I have no credit card, gift card, or anything else like that. Taking a webcomic down after creating a print version is a highly unusual move, and if I’d known I’d lose access, I probably wouldn’t have bothered reading it and thus getting attached. Heck, maybe Anne spelled it all out in the beginning and my memory’s just crap. I’m probably (definitely) overreacting, but I can’t help feeling upset by this.
And so I’ve recorded my teary meltdown for posterity. Sorry, guys. Enjoy the rest of the comic.
Hey Anna,
I’m sorry you missed my notes about taking down the archives. I mentioned it a couple times, but I understand these days with algorithms and different schedules it can be easy to miss. It definitely wasn’t my intention to upset or blindside you!
You’re right, when a webcomic gets a print version it doesn’t always mean the archive comes down. However when a webcomic gets picked up by a major publisher it happens far more often. Dark Horse bought the rights to produce online editions of the work, so having an archive up for free undermines all the work they’re doing to promote and sell the story. Most of this year I was actually under the impression I would have to take the ENTIRE website down and stick only with print, but I talked with my editor and came up with the plan to continue updating the volumes that weren’t yet in print, because I know there are readers out there like yourself who are committed to the web version and would want to keep reading along as I created pages.
I was hoping the synopsis would be enough to catch you up to the first two volumes but I understand wanting to read the whole thing again. The first two volumes are also available in most libraries and book stores across the US and abroad so it is possible to read them without spending money. I know it’s a bit less convenient and I often wish I could give away all of my work for free to everyone but it’s just not a realistic way for me to make a living as an artist.
Sorry again!
Anne
Did you click the top area where it says about “80” captures? It will take you back to 2010 and the first page. You can read most of the comic like normal until the most recent pages.
Seriously it doesn’t replace buying the comic, but if you’re completely broke, unable to buy things online, wanting to read the story in its entirety before deciding, a new reader who just found this comic and want to see what they are ordering, or someone who ordered the first volume and can’t wait, this will do for the mean time.
That said I am planning to get the printed copy. I saved it on my amazon wish list. I’m just waiting to see how this volume turns out.
You can still get it at Amazon on the Kindle. Or pay more for the physical copy. The physical copy right now is a dollar cheaper at Target (dot) com than at Amazon plus last year around winter (northern hemisphere) they have a 10% off sale.
So happy to see the comic has started up again!
