The ribbons that tie the bells to the spears slide up and unwrap when the spear hits a Thing. So after he threw the spear the first time it unraveled, but he doesn’t quite know how to get it back the way it was for another throw.

It’s a little more than that, though that is a part of it. It certainly isn’t very complicated though. You’ll see!
