And so it begins!

I’ve been working on Bird Boy for almost a year now. It began last year in a class back at RISD, where I drew a comic called “Little Warrior, Big Hunt”, which featured a little boy in a big bird mask, trodding through the snow with his arms full of swords. Ten minutes after I drew it, I tossed it! The assignment was a week long, and the comic was supposed to be short. I ended up with a two page comic about a bear, but the little bird boy stuck in my head. I knew I wanted to put him in a story, but it couldn’t just be a one shot: he had too many things to get done! And so began the 10 months of figuring out just what this little guy’s story was.

When I was working on the promo/cover page for Volume I, I randomly chose the date of October for an official start, and it felt like it was really far off! And now here we are. I needed to have a solid deadline to work towards. And back in the spring I had no idea if I would hit that date or not. I even began pitching Bird Boy at Comic Con last summer without even having an outline written out! Or any pages drawn or anything. Just a bunch of character sketches and “It’s about a boy…” But I knew if I didn’t I might keep putting it off.

And then, suddenly, it was ready. And I’m so glad I spent all the time I did to really push myself and make it great. Because at the end of the day, I wanted to give every person who read this something more. Something to really hold onto. And I will continue until I have achieved just that.

Please enjoy this story, my friends.
