And so it begins!
I’ve been working on Bird Boy for almost a year now. It began last year in a class back at RISD, where I drew a comic called “Little Warrior, Big Hunt”, which featured a little boy in a big bird mask, trodding through the snow with his arms full of swords. Ten minutes after I drew it, I tossed it! The assignment was a week long, and the comic was supposed to be short. I ended up with a two page comic about a bear, but the little bird boy stuck in my head. I knew I wanted to put him in a story, but it couldn’t just be a one shot: he had too many things to get done! And so began the 10 months of figuring out just what this little guy’s story was.
When I was working on the promo/cover page for Volume I, I randomly chose the date of October for an official start, and it felt like it was really far off! And now here we are. I needed to have a solid deadline to work towards. And back in the spring I had no idea if I would hit that date or not. I even began pitching Bird Boy at Comic Con last summer without even having an outline written out! Or any pages drawn or anything. Just a bunch of character sketches and “It’s about a boy…” But I knew if I didn’t I might keep putting it off.
And then, suddenly, it was ready. And I’m so glad I spent all the time I did to really push myself and make it great. Because at the end of the day, I wanted to give every person who read this something more. Something to really hold onto. And I will continue until I have achieved just that.
Please enjoy this story, my friends.
The end!
Haha, no, just kidding. That would be a pretty concise story, though.
Thanks to everyone who stopped by and read/commented on the first page. You guys are the best! Only one page up and still people are excited, that’s pretty neat. Hopefully the comic will live up to all these expectations, haha.
If you are enjoying the comic, please take a minute to vote for it on TWC, and you’ll get a little picture/sketch/thing that’ll change every so often. You could also plug the comic on your site/facebook/some random forum if you reeaaally wanted to! I’ve been waiting to do any bigger promotion until I get a few more pages out, but I always appreciate more pageviews.
Thanks for reading!
A lot of people have been asking “hey, are you going to make the whole comic in that style with the painted rock art?”
Well, this page will make that clear for you! First page of the actual ‘present’ storyline. But this is not the last you have heard of Mali Mani, let me tell you! He is kind of a big deal.
News! First off, there’s new art in the art section! Not fanart per se, but a commission by the lovely Dershing Helmer, creator of The Meek. Be sure to check that out because it is awesome!
Secondly, nominations for The 2010 Webcomic List Awards are now open! If you are at all involved in any aspect of comic production, you’re eligible to nominate some of your favorite webcomics! Nominations are open through December 20. Sooo if there’s a certain (cough) webcomic out there that’s (cough hack) just started and you (cough cough) wanted to show some support (cough hack cough)…..XD
That’s all for tonight. As always, thanks for reading and enjoy! Next week we might even catch a glimpse of the main character or something…
Masks abound! Turns out a page like this takes at least three times as long to make as one of the stone pages, so that’s why I’m a little late. Sorry about that, but at least the page is here now! And now I have a bit of a better idea as to how long one of these will take.
And finally a glimpse of some of our characters. That’s Bali, with the armfull of spears. And the hunters: Chega, Lakasi, Tilo, and Bas from left to right.
Enjoy the page! Next week is Thanksgiving in America…so that either means I will have lots of time for pages or no time for pages…uh…But I usually update my progress on my twitter, so if you’re ever wondering about updates that’s a good place to look.
Bali continues to follow after his comrades. And, gasp, some word bubbles at last! But good luck trying to read them :d
Updating a little early (or late, depending on how you’re looking at it) since I’ll be away all weekend and I wanted to get a comic up before then. Enjoy!
Hey friends! Next comic will be up sometime after Christmas- Bali’s busy helping Santa carry some of those toys. Happy Holidays!
Oooooh snap.
Good thing the hunters speak English too, or we’d never know what they were saying. “Ah na” is kind of like “no”, while just “Na?” is sort of like “Eh?” Meanwhile, mysterious language is mysterious (they’re talking about hunting, though. Nothing exciting.)
Those things they’re hunting are the Eshe, they DO have sticks for legs, but they are also full of deliciousness which is more than I can say for most of the other local beasts, which tend to be full of small stones and crystals and bits of old bone. (no…..really….)
I’ll be sure to update the vote incentive later today- it’s a bit early in the morning to do anything more now but I do have lots and lots of fun sketches to choose from. I appreciate your votes regardless, and all your support! Enjoy!
Happy New Year Guys! Check out this weird liminal page update! It’s 2011 on the East Coast but not yet on the West. Weeiird. There wasn’t gonna be an update originally, but I managed to pump this one out in 24 hours, so that was nice.
Oh boy, look at that wall of text. In English no less! I must be spoiling you guys. Finally some info. If you didn’t get it through context, Smokewalk is basically a Nuru Bar Mitzvah, except it involves all the boys of the village at once in a certain age group and can last somewhere from a week up to a few months. It’s also where they get to learn that funky runic language you keep seeing pop up.
Finally updated the vote incentive too, so check that out. And enjoy your first update of the new year/last update of 2010!
In which Bali….does not listen at all.
Late page! Or on time page, depending on how you see it. I had a bit of trouble with the layout, actually. Originally there was a whole ‘nother conversation stuck in there, I pulled it at the last second and the thumbnails I did for the page didn’t work anymore, so there was last minute fretting and sketching involved that I didn’t anticipate.
Meanwhile, a happy greeting to all the new readers out there! Scott McCloud of Understanding Comics fame did me a wonderful favor a couple weeks back and plugged Bird Boy and let people know it exists. So if you’ve made your way here from there: Hi!
I’m so glad you guys are enjoying the comic. Just wait, this isn’t even the tip of the iceberg. See you next week!
Faceplant part two. Just where is Bali wandering off to?
A couple weeks ago I got the chance to interview with the podcast Sci Fi Saturday Night! We talked quite a bit about Bird Boy and Cealdian and comics in general so if you were interested in listening to the show, you can find it here. The interview’s during the second half of the recording. It was a lot of fun, check it out!
That’s all for now. I promise this comic eventually has a plot and is not just Bali frolicking aimlessly in the wilderness forever!
